Forestry and Wood Products, Inc., is seeking entry or experienced foresters for positions with leadership and career growth opportunity who are motivated to live and work in the awesome Colorado Mountains and Forests.

Our
work is mostly on private lands, and continues the adaptive private forestry work
practiced by lead forester and company owner, Len Lankford, over the past 33
years in his consulting firm, Lankford Foresters, Inc., and in Greenleaf
Forestry and Wood Products, Inc. since 1994. Greenleaf offers a unique capacity and opportunity for practicing restoration and landscape quality forestry and value-added utilization of
salvaged and harvested materials. The non-commercial
private forestlands of Colorado offer especially valuable and aesthetic forests
to shape and maintain for long-term environmental and landowner benefits, including wildfire protection.
a. AREAS OF WORK: Duties
will include gradually learning, becoming proficient, and assuming responsibility for
forestry management, wood product, & implementation work with demonstrated interest, progress, and as assigned in the following areas of work (tailored to the individual):
Small firewood timber sales,
including layout, advertising, sales, and administration.
Timber marking and sale
administration in selectively-managed sawtimber and other wood product or live
transplant tree sales.
Individual and landowner association
contacts, service development, service sales, and project management.
Project initiation, procurement, layout, and
administration for company and contract crews.
Cost share and other incentive/ education program
applications, coordination, and collaboration with the Colorado State Forest Service and other organizations and agencies.
Forest management plan inventory,
analysis, and writing, and subsequent implementation, for forest agriculture tax and ongoing management.
Forestry services and integrated wood product business
management, including learning and implementing comprehensive cost controls,
budgeting, business planning, administration, financial planning, bookkeeping,
tax accounting, legal compliance, safety, and personnel management.
Forestry service and operations job
procurement, management, and performance for forest stewardship projects on
National Forest and other public lands.
Integration and coordination of
company forestry with company wood product operations.
Grant writing and other assistance on
behalf of the company for sustainable, community-based forestry business
development, model building, and capacity increase.
Participation in state and national
meetings if possible on topics of interest to the company.
Hosting or assisting with periodic forestry /wood product educational seminars & workshops.
Physical work with forestry
equipment and operations, participating full or part time in executing forestry
projects and tree planting as necessary, first as a seasonal crew member under
an existing experienced crew manager and then advancing to crew leader, and
then possibly advancing to lead forester, with seasonal cross-training in forest products.
As necessary, helping recruit,
train, and manage seasonal forestry and wood product crews and Foresters / Technicians with
business growth.
In
summary, the Management and Operations Foresters/ Technicians, with demonstrated and competitive ability and
success on the job, will gradually be trained and take over existing and developing business and forest
management work. New duties will be assigned depending on proven work at each level. The goal is to expand forest
operations and services within our territory with professional forestry/ forest landscape managers and more seasonal, trained, and professional crews. Therefore, initial duties will include physical work with crews to thoroughly learn the process, and progress
to management while maintaining operational crew capabilities. With experience and proven initiative and ability, the Management Foresters /Technicians will assume increasing forestry business management responsibility for the
company.
Depending
on previous experience, the initial work year will be in a progressive internship/apprenticeship of entrepreneural forestry and integrated business management, with a combination of base hourly pay and company profit-sharing. Compensation and benefits are expected to grow for several years, depending on the Forester/ Technicians’s ability with our training to generate
business success and earnings. A continuing eduation, training and on-the-job experience plan will
be developed with Len Lankford to help reach success more quickly.
b. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS.
Applicants should indicate in writing their level of capacity, interest,
training and/or experience specifically in each of the following categories (Note: This will give us where to start. Not all are
required, and a work plan will be tailored to the successful applicant):
a. Bachelor of Forestry, Forest Management, or
equivalent, preferably with Business, or Associate of Forestry (Forest Technician.) Degree candidates may be accepted as apprentices. b. Forestry, land, and road
management and operations. c. Entrepreneurial forestry and
commitment to sustainable community-based forestry. d. Desire to practice professional
forestry from the ground up, i.e. -- to be a Forester. e. Ability now or with training to be a self-starter and creative thinker.
f. Business and business management,
sales, and marketing training and/or work. g. Proficiency or aptitude in Writing, English, Spelling, and Math. h. Mechanical aptitude and
experience. i. Reliable and gas-efficient 4x4
woods transportation, current or planned. j. Excel, Word, PowerPoint,
Internet, and basic business computerized bookkeeping. k. Financial status allowing
base pay with variable additional performance-based pay. l. Basic physical fitness, good health, and
demonstrated ability to work with people. m. Adaptability to challenging and seasonal working
conditions, including outdoor work in winter snow and cold
typical of Colorado Mountains, and to a non-smoking/drug working & lodging
environment. n. Willingness to travel overnight within the working territory. o. Willingness to stay in this
position for several years on a company career path. p. Desire to learn on the job and on one's own time, and to
develop personal forestry professionalism. q. Commitment to living and working in the
Colorado Mountains and Forests. r. Favorable references, valid driver’s
license, current or future First Aid and CPR, and other background.
